We're off! Southampton get us underway, attacking from left to right.
Good afternoon and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Premier League game between Southampton and Newcastle United at St. Mary’s.
While it may not have been an absolutely disastrous start to the season for Southampton, it certainly hasn’t been a particularly good one. They failed to impress under Claude Puel and have continued to struggle under new boss Mauricio Pellegrino, who already finds himself under pressure after managing to pick up just eight points from the opening seven games.
Southampton’s main problem has been in the final third of the pitch, where they’ve desperately struggled to find the back of the net. Their record of failing to score in eight of their last nine home league games is an incredibly worrying one, and it doesn’t bode well for this afternoon’s clash against a well-organised and defensively compact Newcastle team.
Things are looking much more positive for Newcastle, who will move equal on points with Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea if they’re victorious this afternoon. They did well to pick up a hard-earned draw at home to Liverpool before the international break and have enjoyed three wins and a draw from their last five Premier League games, the fourth-best record over that period.
Newcastle were beaten in two of their three away games this campaign, but all were closely fought affairs and they’ll be feeling quietly confident about their chances of coming away with all three points today. They’ve struggled against Southampton in recent years, however, with the Saints winning four of the last five meetings between the two sides.
There’s just under 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this afternoon…
Newcastle United substitutes: Darlow, Gamez, Clark, Diame, Merino, Murphy, Gayle.
Southampton XI (4-2-3-1): Forster; Cedric, Van Dijk, Yoshida, Bertrand; Romeu, Lemina; Tadic, Long, Redmond, Gabbiadini.
Mauricio Pellegrino has decided to make just one change to the Southampton side that started the defeat away to Stoke City two weeks ago, with Manolo Gabbiadini coming into the starting line-up to replace Steven Davis.
Meanwhile, Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has made two alterations to the team that featured in their last outing, with Ciaran Clark and Mikel Merino making way for Florian Lejeune and Isaac Hayden, respectively.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
Newcastle United XI (4-2-3-1): Elliot; Yedlin, Lascelles, Lejeune, Manquillo; Shelvey, Hayden; Ritchie, Perez, Atsu; Joselu.
HALF-TIME: SOUTHAMPTON 0-1 NEWCASTLE UNITED
Southampton have dominated possession so far but they've struggled to break down a compact and well-organised Newcastle back line. The visitors have dug in well and frustrated their opponents, who have strung together some decent passes in the final third of the pitch but have found it difficult to test Elliot with any clear-cut chances.
The two teams are making their way back out on to the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.
FULL-TIME: SOUTHAMPTON 2-2 NEWCASTLE UNITED
Newcastle looked to be on course for another victory after impressing during the first half, but Southampton showed great grit and determination to fight back and score twice through Gabbiadini. The Italian's second goal came from the penalty spot after Long was clumsily fouled by Lejeune, and after that an open end to the game could have resulted in a winner for either side.
In the end, neither were able to find that all-important third goal, with Lejeune going closest with a last-minute header that was cleared off the line by Davis. The draw means Newcastle remain in ninth place heading into their next game against Crystal Palace, while Southampton, who now sit in 10th, must take on West Bromwich Albion.
