Hello and welcome to our LIVE text commentary of the Premier League fixture between Everton and Burnley at Goodison Park.
A victory for Everton would move them above the Clarets in the table, whilst three points for the away side would result in them achieving their best ever start to a Premier League campaign.
Everton looked to have turned their fortunes around after back-to-back wins, but conceding a late equaliser to Apollon Limassol in the Europa League has yet again heaped the pressure on Ronald Koeman’s side. The boos that greeted the Toffees on Thursday evening highlights the restless mood amongst the Goodison Park faithful, despite their side being unbeaten in three matches in all competitions. They will be hoping Oumar Niasse, who was left out on Thursday, reignites the home side after his brace rescued a victory against AFC Bournemouth last weekend.
Despite having to wait until April 2017 for their first victory on the road last season, Burnley will be confident ahead of this afternoon’s clash at Goodison Park after transforming their away form at the start of this campaign. The Clarets are unbeaten in their first three away matches after drawing to Tottenham and Liverpool, whilst beating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on the opening day. They have also started well at Turf Moor, with Sean Dyche’s side most recently drawing to Huddersfield last weekend to make it five matches unbeaten from their opening six.
Both teams recorded one victory each in the two matches between these sides last season. Burnley were 2-1 victors at Turf Moor courtesy of a last-minute winner from Scott Arfield, whilst the Toffees were comfortable 3-1 winners in the reverse fixture.
HEAD TO HEAD: Everton have won on four occasions between the sides in the Premier League, whilst Burnley have won twice.
There’s just over 15 minutes to go until kick-off, so let’s reveal how the two teams line-up…
Ronald Koeman has made three changes to the side that beat Bournemouth last weekend. Mason Holgate, Davy Klaassen and Wayne Rooney move to the bench for Michael Keane, Oumar Niasse and Nikola Vlasic. The Croatian has been rewarded with a starting spot after scoring in the Europa League on Thursday.
Sean Dyche makes no changes, sticking with the starting eleven who drew to Huddersfield last weekend.
The teams walk out and are greeted by loud cheers and applause from the crowd inside Goodison Park. The game will get underway shortly.
Will Ronald Koeman turn to his substitutes at half-time? With Wayne Rooney, Sandro Ramirez and Davy Klaassen on the bench, I'm sure he will as his side lost all confidence after going a goal behind. The second-half will get underway shortly.
As well as achieving their best ever start to a Premier League campaign, Burnley's victory ensures they remain unbeaten away from home and means they have already achieved more points on the road than the whole of the 2016/17 season combined.
Thank you for joining our Live Text Commentary this afternoon between Everton and Burnley. Until next time, goodbye.
HALF-TIME - EVERTON 0-1 BURNLEY - Jeff Hendrick's goal has given the away side the lead at the break after he showed great composure to find the bottom right-hand corner of the net. The Toffees started the game well by dominating the early stages, however they couldn't make their pressure count and found themselves a goal behind twenty minutes into the contest.
FULL TIME - EVERTON 0-1 BURNLEY - Jeff Hendrick's first-half goal secures a historic victory for the Clarets, who move onto 12 points to achieve their best ever start to a Premier League season. The victory was fully deserved, as Sean Dyche's side defended superbly from the off by forcing Everton into hopeful efforts instead of dangerous ones. After coping with the initial pressure from the home side, Burnley capitalised with their first meaningful attack of the game as Stephen Ward played the ball to Jeff Hendrick, who glided past Morgan Schneiderlin before calmly slotting it into the bottom right-hand corner. The Toffees failed to create any opportunities in the second-half, which will infuriate Ronald Koeman, as the away side held out for all three points at Goodison Park.
