Huddersfield host Southampton after a brilliant start to their debut Premier League campaign in which they have beaten Crystal Palace 3-0 on the opening day before a battling 1-0 win over Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle.
Good afternoon and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Premier League game between Huddersfield Town and Southampton at the John Smith’s Stadium.
A point today for David Wagner’s side would represent a strong start to the season and a solid platform to build on in their bid to survive their first stint in the Premier League and they have the likes of Aaron Mooy and Steve Mounie to make that happen.
New season and yet another new manager for Southampton and Mauricio Pellegrino has it work cut out for him. The Saints were knocked out of the EFL Cup by Wolves during the week and it took a late winner to snatch all three points against 10-man West Ham United last weekend.
Southampton still have to contend with the ongoing transfer saga of Virgil Van Dijk and it has been a difficult start for Pellegrino. However, the Saints have more than enough in their locker to ensure they remain clear of relegation and that could be kick-started with a convincing performance today.
There’s just under 15 minutes to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this afternoon…
Huddersfield Town Subs: Malone, Coleman, Lolley, Williams, Quaner, Hefele, Palmer.
Huddersfield Town XI (4-2-3-1): Lössl; Smith, Jorgensen, Schindler, Löwe; Mooy, Billing; Kachunga, Ince, van La Parra, Mounie.
Huddersfield remain unchanged from the side that beat Newcastle United last weekend and effectively have a full strength squad available, with no new injury concerns to contend with.
Only one change for Southampton from their win against West Ham last weekend, with Wesley Hoedt replacing Jan Bednarek on the bench.
The teams are coming out onto the pitch with kick-off just moments away.
Southampton looked to have the better of Huddersfield early in the first half but the Terriers bounced back and caused the Saints all kinds of problems with their high pressing game. The home side dominated the latter stages and were denied a half-time lead by some excellent blocks.
Both sides are back out on the pitch as the start of the second-half approaches.
HALF TIME: HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 0-0 SOUTHAMPTON
FULL TIME: HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 0-0 SOUTHAMPTON
A game of missed chances as both sides had a number of clear cut opportunities to take the three points at a lively John Smith's Stadium. It will be seen as a good point for Huddersfield Town against a strong Southampton side, but they will be frustrated to not to have won the game after being in control for the majority of the game. Southampton only truly came to life in the final 10 minutes and some poor finishing and dogged defending prevented them securing their second win of the season.
